Club Championship Regatta 2001

September 03, 2001  | Results  |  News Archives...

A chilly Saturday morning found sailors cheerfully preparing their boats for the battle for the title of "Club Champion". Two short races took place before lunch, and the wind cooperated although it was a bit shifty. The race order was switched to allow the cruisers a head-start, since they have to sail the same course as everyone else for this regatta. A sad moment occurred when our commodore came limping back into port with her mast down, but the dart fleet came to her aid and she was back in business after lunch. The sailors were promised a long race in the afternoon, and it worried the race committee when the wind died off while the boats were visiting the dam. Sunday did not run so smoothly... the wind (or lack of it) caused delays in the starts, and the dart fleet abandoned the second race of the day. Then the wind picked up in the middle of that race, and those on the water had a fun ride. Many boats had great races at this regatta! The final results don’t show how often the order of boats changed throughout each race... with the one exception of TriOomph. After the Portsmouth ratings were applied to all five races, our overall Club Champion was Doug Mackenzie and crew in the Trailer Tri.

A great big thank you goes out to Steve Currie, Jim MacKenzie, Richard Graff, Kent Sullivan and Mike Shirmer for their assistance in the Safety Boats, and to Hannah for running the snack bar. After all the races and a great dinner (thanks, Marc Lacoursiere!), everyone had tremendous fun with the games planned and run by Carlene Hone and Jim Mackenzie.
