Age 7-9 yrs - Wet Feet - 1/2 Days

Introduction to sailing in stable, sturdy Optimist dinghies (designed specifically for 1 or 2 beginners to sail). Sailors learn parts of the boat, basic steering and sail control skills in a small-group environment. This program emphasizes safety, fun, and learning, and provides ideal preparation for CANSail 1 & 2. For the 2024 season, student must turn age 7 by Dec 31, 2024.

Classes run 1 week, half days - 9am – 1pm. A 4-student minimum is needed to run each session.

Bus service is not available for any student in 2024.

Students are expected to be good crewmates. Abusive behaviour or language will not be tolerated and students will be asked to leave the program if any incidents occur.

Parents / guardians that will be driving their child to the School should plan to drop off between 8:45 and 9:00 AM and pickup at 1:00 PM. We will provide UTRCA staff at the Park gate with lists of students for each week and they will grant you free entrance into the Fanshawe Conservation Area for School purposes only. Age 9-18 yrs - CANSail 1-2 - YOUTH

Introduces BEGINNERS to sailing by teaching water safety, seamanship, rigging and basic boat handling under a coach’s direction to a point where the student has sufficient knowledge and skills to sail safely and competently without supervision in winds of 8-15 km/hr. For the 2024 season, student must turn 9 by Dec 31, 2024.

FYCSS notes that for the safety of each student and all other sailors, enrolment in a course does not guarantee certification at any level. The required skills on the CANSail level checklists must be met by each student in order to achieve certification.

Students are expected to be good crewmates. Abusive behaviour or language will not be tolerated and students will be asked to leave the program if any incidents occur.

*Included in your registration fee is an $20 +HST Sail Canada/Ontario Participant Fee.

Age 9-18 yrs - CANSail 3-4 - YOUTH

Continuing from Level 2 with introducing sail trim, basic boat tuning and covers additional safety, seamanship, terminology, sail theory, sail shape and advanced boat handling skills in winds of 15-25 km/hr. Level 3 requires participation in a club race. Level 4 requires participation in a full regatta.

Age 12-18 yrs - CANSail 5-6 / Race Team - YOUTH

The Race Team is the most advanced level of instruction offered at FYCSS and provides students with the chance to work towards their CANSail 5 and 6 levels, the highest levels in the certified Sail Canada CANSail program.

Participants on the team will work towards their athletic and certification goals under the guidance of a certified Sail Canada Race Coach while training and travelling to regattas throughout southern Ontario during July and August. This team is an exciting, intense and rewarding experience for both the participants and their parents. In order to ensure this experience is the best possible for everyone involved, this team requires that both the participants and parents of each team member remain committed and involved for the duration of the season. The family of each participant on the Race Team is required to voluntarily contribute to the organization, chaperoning and / or transportation of the team in an amount proportional to the number of participants on the team.
